NAVIGATING IDENTITY AND POWER: INUIT EDUCATORS AND THE FUTURE OF ARTIC WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
4:30PM | Haldeman 041
  • Public education is modeled from the values and needs of society as perceived by those in power to make decisions: the educational leaders. Inequity and imbalance in education is a significant multi-faceted challenge within the Inuit homelands of Nunavut, Canada. Within the Inuit Nunangat, which is divided by four different regional governments and separated from the rest of country through federal policies governed by land claims, most educational leadership positions in Nunavut are held by non-Inuit. With support from an ArcticNet grant (2019-2023), we attempted to examine this puzzle: why were there so few Inuit leaders in education in areas dominated by Inuit populations? The answer to this question, derived from interviews with approximately 60 Inuit educators pointed to a series of complex entanglements related to multiple identities that were personal-, cultural-, and community-related.

  • Check out the Institute of Arctic Studies’ 2025 Canada Fulbright Lecture this week being given by Dr. Kathy Snow, Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Prince Edward Island (PEI).

  • Dr. Snow’s current studies are co-created with Inuit educators in the Arctic and her international, community-engaged, research has helped inform practices of inclusive education and the well-being of students around the world.

  • Please RSVP for the in-person event here or register for the live-stream here
