SPEAKER EVENT - FORMERLY UNDOCUMENTED? THE POWER AND LIMITS OF IMMIGRANT LEGALIZATION
4:30PM - 6:00PM | Dartmouth Hall 105
Oscar R. Cornejo Casares, D'17 and Assistant Professor of Latin American Studies at Davidson College, will be drawing on in-depth life history interviews with 56 Latin American undocumented, semi-legal and formerly undocumented immigrants in the Chicagoland area. He argues that undocumented immigrants internalize structures of immigration law through long-term socialization, forming durably conditioned and conditioning dispositions connected to embodied exclusionary socio-legal histories. This research challenges the prevailing citizenship logics of pro-immigrant social movements and the scholarly understanding of legal status, demonstrating the need for the transformation of immigration structures.
Sponsored by Rockefeller Center, Latin American, Latino & Carribbean Studies, and Sociology Truxal Funds.

Power Politics, Energy Security, and the Future of Venezuela
Tuesday, January 20 at 4:30PM
(IN PERSON) Haldeman Hall (map).
The event will not be livestreamed, but a recording will be made available online after the event.
The dramatic U.S. operation to arrest the President of Venezuela underscores the Trump Administration’s more assertive policy toward countries in the Western Hemisphere. How should we understand the evolving U.S. approach? What are its goals, and are they reasonable and attainable given the global geopolitical landscape? To what extent is this recent development a departure from past U.S. policy?
What role does oil—and concerns about “energy security”—play in U.S. actions toward Venezuela? Will private firms be able to rapidly increase Venezuelan energy exports? Can they be induced to try? And critically, how will local political dynamics and deep histories, both in Venezuela and across the region, shape the response to and effectiveness of the new U.S. policy?
Featured Panelists:
Daryl Press, Faculty Director of the Davidson Institute for Global Security, a leading scholar on U.S. foreign policy, deterrence, and the future of warfare.
Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht, Harris Distinguished Visiting Professor from Germany’s Technical University of Bergakademie Freiberg (sponsored by the Irving Institute) & Vice-Chair of Strategic Leadership for the World Energy Council.
Bill Davis, former CEO & Lead Country Manager – South Asia at ExxonMobil India.
Peter DeShazo, Visiting Professor, Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies
This event is co-sponsored by the Irving Institute for Energy & Society, Davidson Institute for Global Security at Dartmouth, Dickey Center for International Understanding, and the Office of the Provost.
