Looking to study in the field?
Wild Rockies Field Institute
What if you did something completely different this fall—something that gets you out of the classroom and into the field, traveling across landscapes instead of between buildings?
The Wild Rockies Field Institute (WRFI) offers immersive field studies courses accredited through the University of Montana. Our programs combine rigorous academics with extended backcountry travel, so you’re not just learning about environmental issues – you’re living in the places where they unfold, alongside a close-knit group of peers.
Their flagship semester, Montana Afoot & Afloat, is a 70-day expedition across the state’s diverse ecosystems – from the Rocky Mountain Front to the eastern plains. You’ll travel by foot and canoe while earning 15 upper-division credits in environmental studies, Native American studies, and geography. What's more, we offer sliding-scale tuition for this course, meaning your course cost is based on your household income. If you’re looking for a semester that challenges you, connects you to the natural world, and makes financial sense, this is your invitation.
Students who are interested in joining us for the 2026 field season can submit an initial online application here.
For questions, please reach out to WRFI's Student Experience Manager, Kelsey Wellington, at kelsey.wellington@wrfi.net.
