Welcome First Years: A Letter from the Sustainability Office

Dear First Year,

Welcome to Dartmouth! We can’t wait to meet you and for those of you about to embark on a DOC First Year trip – have fun! You’ll get to meet lots of awesome sustainability students at the Organic Farm, the Lodge, and working behind the scenes to make Trips run while you are on your adventure.

The Dartmouth Sustainability Office is an office of 8 staff who work hard to challenge and empower Dartmouth College and students to solve the human and environmental problems presented by a rapidly changing planet. Those challenges connect to the environment, policy, justice, design, finance, food and more. We do this via hands on learning, building inclusive community, and transforming campus operations.

Students are an integral part of this work! As a Dartmouth student, you will take in the best of Dartmouth. You will learn, grow, and decide how you can have a positive impact in the world. You will also have the opportunity to change Dartmouth for the better and to help Dartmouth be a leader in sustainability. In short, Dartmouth will change you, and you will change Dartmouth. We hope you use this opportunity to pursue your passions and to discover new ones.

In our Office, nearly all of our programs and initiatives were started by students identifying a need or opportunity, pitching an excellent idea, and following up to make it happen! From Dartmouth Bikes and the Sustainability Action Workshop to the Sustainable Living Center and the Dartmouth Organic Farm, students have been the driving force behind making these programs a reality.

This opportunity is open to all students on campus. The sustainability community is a broad and diverse group of first years, upperclassmen, faculty, staff, alums, and community members. We need you! You don’t need to have past sustainability experience or be planning to major in Environmental Studies. No matter your major, background, identity, or academic and social interests, your thoughts, opinions, feedback, and ideas matter to us! Everyone has something to bring. We can’t make the world a better, more sustainable place unless our solutions are informed by everyone who is affected by those human and environmental challenges.

Sound good to you? Come find us during orientation next week! We can’t wait to get to know you and will be at the following events:
